BioPharma Mexico - Top 9 Innovators | Terrapinn Blogs

One of the most important things to look for when establishing a new pharmaceutical or biotech company is scientific talent in the region.

Terapinn has compiled a list of the top innovations that will be presented at BioPharma Mexico 2013. Each of these projects were selected because of their originality and relevance to the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. But most importantly, these projects show that there is scientific talent in Mexico, which makes it ideal to conduct clinical development of any type.

This ranking was built based on the novelty of each project and its relevance to the pharmaceutical and health industries. The selection criteria are based on the following:

• Originality of research
• Relevance to industry
• Technology
• Clinical stage of project
• Projected impact

The innovators are listed in alphabetical order by project and are not ranked within the 9.

## Production of Vaccines Fused to Genetically Encoded Nanocrystals

Innovator Scientist: Luis Vaca, CaramelTech

Innovation:

Baculovirus expression system for insect cells (BEVS) is a novel procedure used to make stable proteins that can be used in vaccines. It takes advantage of the polyhedrin production system in insect cultures to manufacture effective recombinant proteins. This process requires the fusion of a recombinant sequence with a polyhedrin sequence which is then inserted into a BEVS factor, resulting in production of high amounts of encapsulated proteins that are resistant to heat and dehydration.

## MedicalHub: Health maps of Mexico

Innovator Scientist: Ivan Pech, CaramelTech

Innovation:

Medical Hub is a big data project that makes health statistics available to the private sector in Mexico and Latin America. One of its components is Medical Metrics, which creates health maps with health graphics and indicators for each city, state, and country. Medical Manik complements it by allowing doctors to control their patients records on the go. Medical Hub will benefit pharma by facilitating the application of big data to the developing and monitoring of novel therapies and the generation of new health initiatives.

## Autologous Stem Cells Grafting in Chronic Stroke Patients

Innovator Scientist: Caridad I. Fernandez, CIREN

Innovation:

BMSC can be safely transplanted into the brain of patients suffering from chronic consequences of stroke with excellent tolerance and without complications. The use of autologous cells offers the additional advantages of circumventing the immune reactions associated with the use of allograft.

## CLINICIT: Clinical Interpretation Tool for Patients

Innovator Scientist: Hector Sanchez, G2 Apps

Innovation:

CLINICIT is the new virtual tool that supports all patient needs in Mexico. It consists of a data base that contains information on hospitals, doctors, specialists, and pharmaceutical drugs in the country. One of its unique characteristics is its ability to find and locate medicines throughout national territory. It will direct the user to the nearest pharmacy that sells the product; it will also find the nearest hospital and any specialized doctors in case of an emergency. This application will be available for Android and iPhone.

## Oncologic Biocomparables

Innovator Scientist: Ricardo Lopez Ayala, IQFA

Innovation:

Industrias Quimico Farmaceuticas Americanas (IQFA) is launching a line of biocomparable oncologic drugs. The first drug to be developed is Rituximab, which has an average annual demand of 150 M USD. This line of biocomparables will provide affordable cancer therapy for many patients in Mexico.

## GG9 treatment for insomnia, depression, and anxiety

Innovator Scientist: Ashutosh Sharma, Technologico De Monterrey

Innovation:

GC9 is an innovative product, unique to its market. It is a potent treatment for depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Unlike synthetic pharmaceuticals on the market, GC9 does not cause side effects due to its natural components that treat the nervous system. This product has a patent pending.

## HC-Gastro: Gastric Cancer Prevention

Innovator Scientist: Alexandre Cardoso Taketa

Innovation:

HS Gastro is a highly effective product that counteracts the effects of H. Pylori in the gastric tract. HS Gastro uses its natural properties to stop the growth of this bacterium, which causes gastritis and possible gastric cancer. Approximately 60% of the world’s population is infected with H. Pylori; 20 % of those infected live in developed countries. This product can prevent infection with H. Pylori, reducing the cases of gastric problems in the population.

## GC4 Effective Treatment for Inflammation

Innovator Scientist: Maria Luisa Villarreal Ortega

Innovation:

GC4 was designed from standardized extracts as a phytomedicine. It offers a great anti-inflammation capacity because it takes advantage of the natural properties of the unique Mexican flora. This novel and highly effective treatment, represents a great solution to treating muscular and join pain.

## Biomarkers for the detection of cervical cancer

Innovator Scientist: Sergio EncarnaciĆ³n Guevara

Innovation:

This innovation consists of a novel cell culture strategy that used high technology proteomics to find 86 biomarkers for diagnosis in serum and cytological samples (23 and 63 respectively) in patients with cervical/uterine cancer. This project is currently in phase 1of clinical trials waiting for biomarker validation to eventually create a fast-use medical device that can be used in clinics for early detection and prevention.
